 Eating Disorder Recovery Coach

I work with people who are distressed about their relationship with food and their body whether or not you have a Diagnosis of an Eating disorder or not. often queer, Trans, gender Non-conforming and Larger-Bodied People do not have access to formal treatment. And if they do it is usually harmful.

As a recovery coach, I support you with your eating disorder, disordered eating, and body image recovery journey. If you’re struggling with your 367th failed attempt at a diet and you want to stop, I support you in ditching dieting.

I help you in healing your relationship with food and body. Let’s talk about healing and recovery and what these words mean to you.

I hold space for hope in your healing even if you can't imagine it yet.

Healing can be the windiest of roads through the densest of forests. It's nice to have someone to travel the road with you. Sometimes it can be even more meaningful when your travel companion has been on their own food and body healing journey.

I used to have a really fucked up relationship to food and I used to loathe my body. If you want the clinical jargon, I struggled with anorexia, and purging through vomiting, laxatives, and exercise, combined with a lot of orthorexia. Most of that time I thought I had binge eating disorder, yet I never met the criteria for it.

I recognize that it is very much a privilege to recover or identify as “recovered” as there are a lot of systemic forces that keep way too many people from being able to fully recover. I can't promise what your recovery or healing will look like. I can't promise that you will never struggle with eating disorder thoughts again. Wading into the unknown is part of the challenge of reclaiming your body and food.

I promise to listen to you. To listen to your story. To be there with you and hold space for whatever it is that you need as you pursue what healing means to you.

I promise I am committed to providing a space full of empathy and compassion. I am committed to caring for our coaching relationship to prevent harming you. I am committed to providing you with the structure and boundaries that supports your growth and healing.

To search for power within myself means I must be willing to move through being afraid to whatever lies beyond. If I look at my most vulnerable places and acknowledge the pain I have felt, I can remove the source of that pain from my enemies’ arsenals. My history cannot be used to feather my enemies’ arrows then, and that lessens their power over me. Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me.

I share with you the tools that helped me in my recovery. It will most likely be messy. It usually is.

There is so much on the other side of all the disordered thoughts and behaviors. So much life and connection waiting for you. We work together to discover what it is you want beyond preoccupation with food and size.

I know it is scary. I know it might be one of the hardest things you will ever do. You don't have to do it alone. I am there with you along the way.

There are not a lot of people in queer, trans, and/or large bodies talking about being in recovery from an eating disorder. It's just not that common. As I'm sure you probably already know if you share any of those identities and have struggled with an eating disorder, disordered eating, or been on a bajillion diets.

People in the LGBTQQI+ community experience food and body distress more than our straight counterparts. There is an even higher risk if you are trans. The resources and safe spaces available to fat and queer people are pretty few and far between. And even fewer for Black, trans, disabled, and chronically ill folks.

I work to be a safer space for people with non-dominant systemic identities. It's not your job to educate me if your experience differs from mine.

I was educated in the first Body Trust® Provider Certification cohort beginning in October 2016 through Be Nourished in Portland, Oregon.

I am trained as a Certified Peer Wellness Specialist. What is that? It is a really amazing training that falls under the peer support model. Again, you might be thinking - what is that? Honestly, there isn't much out there that actually describes peer support philosophy. You can read here if you want to dig into some writing on it.

Basically the peer support model rejects the pathologizing that happens within the medical model for substance use disorders and mental health challenges. It places priority on the connection between two people, because of their shared experience. Peer Wellness Specialists (PWS) go through an intensive state-approved training program that teaches individuals to use their lived experience to provide advocacy and support for other individuals with similar challenges. PWS's must also be in recovery or have had a family member recover prior to being trained.

The peer support model is meant to empower individuals to pursue what their recovery and/or wellness goals are, rather than have them be determined by someone else and be stripped of their autonomy.
